The October 2026 AI coding price reset

We re-checked all 11 AI coding tools we track against each vendor's own pricing page on 18–19 October. Five changed their prices or plans, one stopped selling, and the flat monthly subscription is turning into a usage bill.

The five findings

  1. Cursor's $20 plan is gone. The cheapest Cursor plan that can use Claude or GPT models is now Premium at $30 a month, and those models bill on top at API price. The new $8 Plus plan runs Grok models only. For the plan most developers were on, that's a 50% rise before usage.
  2. Flat rates are ending. GitHub Copilot bills in AI credits (1 credit = $0.01 of model usage), JetBrains sells team credits at API price, and Cursor passes third-party model costs through. Three of the biggest tools now charge for what you use rather than for a seat.
  3. The $10 tier survived. Copilot Pro, JetBrains AI Pro and Zed Pro are all still $10 a month. Copilot Pro is the only one that includes a meaningful amount of agent usage at that price: 1,500 credits, worth $15 of model calls.
  4. Seats are disappearing from team pricing. JetBrains no longer sells $20/$60 commercial AI seats; teams buy shared credits and pay $20 a seat only for governance. Devin Teams went the other way and added an $80 base fee.
  5. Two tools left the market for new buyers. Tabnine was acquired by Tricentis (closed 30 July) and no longer sells self-serve. Amazon Q Developer has been closed to new signups since 15 May, with end of support on 30 April 2027. Sourcegraph's Cody is enterprise-only from $16,000 a year.

What a team of 10 pays

Monthly list price before usage overages. Claude Code is left out because we don't track a team plan for it.

Plan Sum Per month Note
GitHub Copilot Business 10 × $19 $190 Includes 19,000 pooled AI credits
JetBrains AI (Air Governance Basic) $0 + credits $0 + usage Credits at API price; IDE licences extra
JetBrains AI (Air Governance Business) 10 × $20 + credits $200 + usage Adds model, agent and MCP policies
Cursor Teams 10 × $30 from $300 Third-party model usage extra
Zed Business 10 × $30 $300
Devin (Windsurf) Teams $80 + 10 × $40 $480 New base fee this cycle

What this means if you're buying

  • On Cursor Pro at $20? Check what you were billed on renewal. If you mostly use Claude, compare Premium at $30 plus usage against Claude Code Pro at $20.
  • Budgeting for a team? Copilot Business is now the cheapest predictable bill, and its pooled credits cover usage up to the seat price. JetBrains and Cursor bills will vary with usage, so set spending limits first.
  • On Tabnine or Amazon Q? Plan a migration. Neither can be bought by new customers, and Amazon Q support ends on 30 April 2027.

How we checked

Every price was read from the vendor's own pricing or store page on 18 or 19 October 2026, not from announcements or third-party sites. JetBrains' store renders in the browser, so we read it in one. Each change is logged with its date on the change tracker, and the current figures for every tool are on the comparison matrix.
